‘If you can’t go far, then go near. But just go’

Gunung Batur, one of Bali’s two active volcanoes rise at 1,717 masl. located in Kintamani village, Bangli, about 90 minutes drive from south coast of the island. Listed as the 10th highest peak on the island, this ancient volcano attracts tourists from across the country even overseas to witness the gorgeous vistas of great outdoor from its highest peak.

Batur historical eruptions was firstly recorded in 1804 and has been since then. Most recent eruption  was recorded back in 2000 and its magnificent eruptions is visible now through the formation of volcanic stones and black lava formations within the ancient caldera including the volcanic lake of Lake Batur.

There are two common trek routes that tourists could take to reach the summit and enjoy the sunrise scenery. Or sunset. Through the Pura Pasar Agung route or through the pines forest.

Although the route of Pura Pasar Agung is safer (arguably) for most tourists, the first part of the trek requires visitors to walk through sandy path that could easily took its toll to most first timer. Gradually elevated, the trek then change into sandy and rocky with higher step-range to the first stop peak.

Pine Forest trek is – arguably – a better route with better scenery offers aside from the pine forest itself. The route elevated directly after a short trek away from the locals settlement around the parking lot. Less sandy, the route challenges visitors after half of the trek with rocky formations lead to the first stop point, the same stop point as the Pura Pasar Agung route.

The last part of these two trek is the most tiresome as it requires about 5 minutes elevating walk to reach the summit. Slippery trek and lots of other tourists might not be a good combination. At times, the summit has no space left for slow trekker. But if you managed to reach the top, the 360 degree view is worth every poured energy.
